Lithium ion battery recycling plant to be inaugurated at Halol

Vadodara: One of the largest lithium-ion battery recycling plants in the country will be inauguratedin Halol town of Panchmahal district on Gujarat Day, May 1. The unit has the capacity to recycle 10,000 metric tonnes (MT) of lithium-ion batteries per annum and will be a zero-waste facility.

Chief minister Bhupendra Patel will inaugurate theunit during Gujarat Day celebrations in Godhra, the headquarters of Panchmahal district. The plantis being established at an existing facility of Rubamin Private Ltd in Halol. The company signed anagreement with the state govt during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit.

Panchmahal district collector Ashish Kumar said that the existing facilities at the unit were involved inthe recycling of other products and the extraction of materials from them.

Kumar stated that the plant benefits from the state govt's electronics policy and the Scheme forPromotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPEcS) of the unionministry for electronics and information technology. He added that the plant will extract materials likelithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite from batteries, promoting the concept of a circular economy.

The unit will use minimal electricity and has its own water body, whose water will be recycled. Kumalmentioned that the unit will use artificial intelligence (Al) and machine learning extensively, besidesbeing a zero-waste facility. The unit also focuses on research and development and has enlisted 125 scientists for this purpose.
