Wuhan Joint Innovation Laboratory for Low-Carbon Circular Economy of Power Batteries Releases AI-Driven Full-Chain Digitalized Recycling Solutions for Retired Batteries

On August 1, 2026, the 2026 Neuro-Symbolic AI Community Workshop and AI-Driven Full-Chain Digitalized Recycling Achievement Release Conference for Retired Batteries was successfully held at the GEM Wuhan Circular Economy Industrial Park.

 

Representatives from universities and enterprises that are members of the Wuhan Joint Innovation Laboratory for Low-Carbon Circular Economy of Power Batteries, together with experts, scholars, and young researchers from the Intel China Research Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chongqing University, and the Neuro-Symbolic AI community, gathered to witness the release of the “AI-Driven Full-Chain Digitalized Recycling and Utilization Solutions for Retired Power Batteries” and the “White Paper on Industrial Technology Progress and Roadmap for Intelligent Power Battery Disassembly (2026 Edition)”.

 

During the event, participants conducted in-depth discussions on AI-enabled recycling and utilization of retired power batteries, exploring new technologies, pathways, and business models for the intelligent transformation of the industry.

 

 

Currently, the retired power battery recycling sector is entering a critical transition phase from “human-driven operations” toward “intelligent autonomous systems.” With the upcoming large-scale retirement wave of power batteries, applying AI technologies to reconstruct the technical system covering flexible battery disassembly, value assessment, resource recovery, and full-process traceability has become a practical necessity for achieving sustainable development of the new energy industry.

 

By enabling the evolution of intelligent battery dismantling technologies along the “L3 → L4” intelligent automation pathway, AI is expected to become a key driver in improving efficiency, safety, and resource utilization across the battery recycling value chain.

 

At the conference, Dr. Zhang Yuping, Chairman of Wuhan Power Battery Recycling Technology Co., Ltd. and Director of the Wuhan Joint Innovation Laboratory for Low-Carbon Circular Economy of Power Batteries, officially released the “AI-Driven Full-Chain Digitalized Recycling and Utilization Solutions for Retired Batteries.”

 

As an important phased achievement jointly developed through industry-academia-research collaboration within the innovation laboratory, the solution addresses major industry challenges, including:

  • Difficulties in retired battery dismantling;
  • Low efficiency in battery condition assessment;
  • High safety risks in battery reuse;
  • Challenges in reverse logistics management and lifecycle traceability.

 

The solution provides a comprehensive digitalized approach integrating intelligent dismantling, residual value assessment, battery reuse, and full-process traceability management.

 

 

In the field of “AI + Battery Disassembly,” the project has established a complete closed-loop system integrating “perception – planning – control – verification – learning.” The system is compatible with more than 30 mainstream battery pack models, including those from CATL, BYD, and CALB. It achieves 3D visual positioning accuracy of 0.3 mm and a non-destructive dismantling yield exceeding 98.5%.

 

In the field of “AI + Battery Reuse,” the system integrates residual value estimation, heterogeneous battery restructuring, intelligent sorting, and cloud-based safety early warning functions. The assessment accuracy reaches 98%, while reuse solutions cover more than 10 application scenarios.

 

In terms of “AI + Full-Process Battery Traceability,” the technology enables 100% traceability management throughout the entire lifecycle, including collection, storage, dismantling, reuse, black mass production, recycled materials, and carbon footprint tracking. A virtual full-stack engineering assistant has also been developed, improving overall process efficiency by 3–5 times.

 

These technological achievements represent industry-leading innovations and provide valuable reference cases for the application of AI technologies in the power battery recycling and utilization sector.

 

 

Going forward, the Wuhan Joint Innovation Laboratory will continue leveraging the advantages of enterprise-driven innovation and industrial ecosystem collaboration. By accelerating the integration of advanced AI research with real-world industrial scenarios, strengthening the transformation pathway from “products → production lines → industry,” and promoting intelligent upgrades across the battery recycling sector, the laboratory aims to contribute Wuhan’s solutions to national strategic resource security, green productivity development, and the advancement of the circular economy.
